Cataract Management

A cataract is a clouding of the eye lens which can impair vision. Though this ocular issue occurs most commonly in seniors, cataracts can develop at any age.

Causes

  • Age
  • Exposure to ultraviolet light
  • Eye trauma
  • Smoking
  • Heavy drinking
  • Certain medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Use of steroid medication
  • A family history of cataracts

If the clouding severely impairs vision and impacts a patient’s ability to perform everyday activities such as driving and reading, then surgical treatment is recommended.

Cataract Symptoms

Cataracts usually form slowly and display only a few symptoms until they noticeably affect vision. These include:

  • Cloudy vision
  • Double vision
  • Poor night vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Problems with glare
  • Sudden changes in your eyeglass prescription

Cataract Diagnosis

At Lethbridge Eye Clinic, our highly trained optometrists are qualified to diagnose cataracts through a full eye examination. This includes:

  • A health and medical history checkup
  • Analysis of your vision history
  • Visual acuity test
  • Visual field test
  • A comprehensive eye-health evaluation

It is especially important for patients above the age of 40 to have regularly scheduled dilated eye exams at least once every two years.

During these vision tests, our optometrists will carefully examine your lens for any signs of cataract formation.

If you are developing cataracts and the clouding is impairing your vision, we can refer you to a trusted and experienced ophthalmologist for surgery.

At Lethbridge Eye Clinic, we provide an array of cataract management services, including all pre and post cataract surgery care.
